Why the Bagpipe is a Unique Musical Instrument
If you have ever seen or heard a bagpipe, you know without a doubt that it is a one of a kind musical instrument. But what makes the bagpipe unique?
The bagpipe has a look all its own. The bagpipe consists of a bag filled with air by means of a blowpipe. Below the bag, the piper holds the canter which is a tube with holes in it resembling a recorder. Large pipes called drones, which rest on the piper’s shoulder, protrude from the top of the bag.
When it comes to sound, the bagpipe can’t be matched. It is quite possibly the loudest musical instrument. The music coming from a single bagpipe can fill a concert hall.
The most unique feature of the bagpipe is the way it is played. Most wind instruments make a sound only while the musician blows into it. This isn’t the case with the bagpipe. When the piper blows air into the bag, the bag fills up. The piper moves the air from the bag by pressing his arm into the bag releasing the air through the drones and canter. If there is air in the bag, the piper can stop blowing, and the bagpipes will keep producing sound.
These are only a few of the unique features of the bagpipe. If you listen to a bagpipe and watch it being played, you will see how it is a great instrument that stands alone. If you like what you see, keep going: Bagpipe Quiz!
